There are some skin care conditions we’ll all have to face at some point in our lives. But thankfully, just because they’re common doesn’t mean they’re not easily treated. Below, we’ve listed a few of the most common skincare problems, along with the best ways to tackle them.
Ah, the dreaded acne. You may well be familiar with it from your teenage years, but sometimes it has a frankly unfair habit of popping right back up again when you’re well into adulthood. It basically affects your skin’s oil glands; in this case, the skin at the top of your pores becomes thicker, and can be plugged with dead skin cells. Sounds nasty, doesn’t it? The good news is that it’s generally temporary, and almost always treatable. Also, almost everyone gets it – around 80% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 have had acne at some stage. It’s not just you!

Another condition often affected by age is wrinkles. They’re mainly caused by the fact that as we get older, our skin gets drier and thinner, losing its elasticity in the process. Every time we use a muscle to smile, or frown, or squint, a miniscule groove forms under our skin. When we’re younger, our skin bounces back to fill this groove, but as we get older it loses its ability to do so.
Smoking doesn’t help either, as it dehydrates your skin, and UV light from prolonged sun exposure breaks down collagen and elastin fibres. You see, when your brain goes into low-power mode it’s the signal for the rest of your body to start repairing itself. If you don’t get enough sleep, it doesn’t have time to complete certain tasks, like building up collagen. There’s a lot less fat in the skin around your eyes, which is why the lack of collagen is most apparent there. There’s a simple answer to this – get more sleep! At least seven or eight hours is the optimum, and allows you to wake up feeling fully refreshed the next morning.
