Have you been getting your beauty sleep? Our skin goes through a lot during the day, as it’s our first layer of defence against pollutants, toxins and UV radiation – just to name a few! So with all that going on during the day, night is when it takes its time to recover. Every night our skin goes into a regenerative state whilst we dream, creating new cells and repairing damage.
You can maximise the work your skin does as you sleep with the right skincare treatments and products. We’ve got everything you need to know to create the best routine for your complexion in this guide!
If your skin is problem-free (meaning no acne, areas of irritation, rosacea etc.), then a basic nighttime routine should keep you covered. Start with cleansing. If you wear makeup every day, it’s important you double cleanse to ensure you remove all of the product. Start with an oil cleanser before moving on to a second, basic cleanser, like the ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser, which will rid your skin of dirt and grime without stripping your healthy oils.
If you want to use a serum, then now’s the time! As you don’t have any current skin concerns, it’s best to look at preventative measures. Try a hyaluronic acid serum to help your skin retain moisture and prevent wrinkles.
Finally, keep your skin soft and supple with a moisturiser. Pick a simple formula that’s not overly oily and opt for simple ingredients.
The two main differences between a basic routine and an anti-ageing routine are going to be your serums and your moisturiser. Both of these should be targeted towards preventing and reducing wrinkles.
Adding a retinol serum is one of the best ways to turn back the clock on your skin. You may also want to add an antioxidant to prevent further damage from air pollution and UV rays, which help to protect your skin.
Your moisturiser should be nourishing and fairly heavy overnight. It should also contain active ingredients to target ageing, like the Zo Skin Health Active Night Repair moisturiser.
Millions of people suffer from acne, but the proper nighttime skincare routine could help clear up your complexion. Opt for a cleanser that targets spots, using ingredients like salicylic acid, which are proven to be beneficial for acne-prone skin.
It would help if you also made evening exfoliation a part of your routine. A chemical BHA exfoliant is brilliant at preventing clogged pores whilst not irritating the skin (just remember to wear an SPF during the day when using a product like this!). Then choose an anti-spot serum. Niacinamide is an excellent choice for regulating sebum, reducing pore size, and is gentle enough to use alongside a chemical exfoliant.
Finish off with a light moisturiser. This doesn’t have to be oil-free, though if you’ve found oils can cause acne flare-ups, then it could be a good choice. Just keep it simple and on the less-nourishing side.
